Technogel is the worldwide exclusive licensee. The history of Technogel began in 1990 with Royal Medica. At that time, Bayer used the gel for the limited production of anti-decubitus cushions for long-stay patients. Technogel is the registered trade name of the special gel, and it is produced using the unique formula (no plasticizers used) patented by Bayer MaterialScience.
The main feature which makes Technogel superior to any other product in the market today is its 3D deformation properties and its shape memory. When pressed by the body Technogel moulds itself to each individual's shape by deforming along all three axes: «up-down», «right-left» and «frontward-backward». Normal padding materials tend, on the other hand, to deform only in the «up-down» direction, causing the considerable accumulation of pressure in the direct contact zones. Technogel, therefore, offers and guarantees optimum comfort over time.
The Company immediately understood the potential of the material and together with the expertise of the «Istituto di Bioingegneria del Politecnico di Milano» (Milan Polytechnic Bio-engineering Institute) designed the anti-decubitus cushion with special geometric features that exploited the elasto-mechanical properties of the gel to the utmost. In a short period of time, a complete range of cushions for wheelchairs, pads for operating theatres and various supports for disabled persons, enhanced the product offering making Royal Medica the well known producer in the sector. In 1997 the company decided to broaden its range of applications of comfort products with gel in other seating environments, entering the office furniture market producing seat cushions, armrests and ergonomic accessories for personal computers.

Next it diversified into the world of walking, producing inserts and insoles for footwear producers. In 1998, Royal Medica entered into joint-venture with Otto Bock GmbH, the world leader of orthopaedic articles and polyurethane foams for automotive, furniture, etc. This joint venture was called Technogel.
Through further research Technogel's benefits were considerably enriched by offering new functions: reduced weight, transparency, colors and temperature regulation. In the meantime, while maintaining the constant mission of «making your world more comfortable», Technogel has developed applications in various fields, such as industrial components for vibration dampening, automotive parts, shop, restaurants and hotels furnishings and, in recent years, have also been used in art objects and operas. Nowadays, once explored medical, seating and walking fields, following the company's philosophy, Technogel focused its development in the ultimate Technogel application: the sleeping environments, particularly mattresses and pillows.
Three good reasons to seat on Technogel:
- Higher back muscles relaxation. The comparative test performed at Delsys Inc in Boston, MA, USA under the direction of Professor C. De Luca, director of the Neuromuscular Research Center of Boston University, shows that in the back muscles for all seating positions, the muscle activity is less with the gel seat than with the foam seat. This indicates that the back muscles while seating on the gel surface are more relaxed (decrease in the EMG activity ranged from 6.0% to 27.1% in the low back muscles). Lower levels of muscle activity are conducive to reduction of the muscle fatigue and more comfortable sensation in the back.
- Lower skin temperature. Technogel, being the good conductor of heat, allows to maintain lower skin temperature on the contact surface, compared to commonly used foam's cushions (from 4°C less in the first hour to 1°C less after 7 hours of seating). The decrease in skin temperature is desirable because there is accompanying decrease in tissue metabolism which will reduce the oxygen requirement in the area of tissue already suffering for poor circulation due to pressure. Lower temperature also reduces sweating.
- Less pressure concentration. Technogel helps to maintain correct posture without «settling» and searching for unnatural position to alleviate the discomfort deriving from pressure concentration. Comparative laboratory tests demonstrate that Technogel cushions gives, after one hour, pressure reduction of around 20% in average and of around 60% in peaks, with benefits to blood circulation.
Technogel is the unique material by its characteristics.
Chemically and industrially, Technogel is polyurethane material, head and shoulders above the others on the market due to the following characteristics:
- It is totally free from plasticizer and other volatile agents. This means that its components cannot split free (they do not migrate), hence not causing substance desegregation.
- It does not harden or age and keeps its elastic-mechanical properties over considerable time. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that it is able to withstand more than 300 000 pressure cycles without deformation, against the 6 000 of normal gels.
- Its polyurethane base is completely non-toxic.
- It can be injected inside moulds like foam.
- It does not expand and remains compact.
As well as being pleasure, comfort sleeping is what you really need for the comfort living. After the disturbed and unsatisfying night's sleep, we have all experienced the feeling of waking up tired, listless and in a bad mood.
After long research and in-depth study, Technogel, the material that has revolutionised comfort in all the main sectors that influence person's wellbeing, has also proved to be excellent support for improving the quality of one's sleep.
With its exclusive characteristics, it has become the new point of reference in rest, easily surpassing all other solutions hitherto adopted.
Technogel moulds itself to each individual user's physical structure, whichever it may be, deforming in all directions (up-down, right-left and frontward-backward), contrary to the most commonly used materials which deform just in one direction (up-down).
Pressure is therefore evenly distributed over the entire contact surface generating substantial reduction in pressure peaks in those areas liable to intense stress. This leads to marked improvement in blood circulation and, as a consequence, to the clear reduction in the number of movements due to the need of changing position, which often interrupt sleep and make it restless.
All this is combined with another extraordinary characteristic. The excellent thermal conductivity of Technogel, which is higher than any other material used to make mattresses and pillows, helps maintaining the body temperature at constantly lower level compared to other supports.
This encourages substantial reduction in perspiration and therefore ensures pleasant sensation of comfort during all the seasons.
Finally, the unique construction and the nature of the Technogel give you the hygienic interface where to sleep, not allowing the growth of bacteria and mites. Technogel maintains this healthy characteristic during the time.
Technogel is the best support to allow deep, uninterrupted and truly restful sleep. That's why Technogel has been chosen by mattress manufacturers who are committed to innovation and to caring for the wellbeing and health of their consumers.
Welcome to the Technogel world!
